Following the successful launch of phase one in March 2023, Colt DCS are proud to announce that one million safe working hours has been achieved onsite at our Osaka Keihanna Data Centre. This is the second major milestone achieved at this facility, having reached 500,000 safe working hours during the first phase build in August last year.
With phase two fully underway and the structural steel recently erected, health and safety remains the top priority for Colt DCS as we strive to deliver 45MW of IT power across a gross site area of 42,000m2 on completion. The one million safe working hours have been achieved during the period of September 2021 to April 2023, having being adopted by everyone involved at the worksite from DCS’ own staff to partners and hired contractors. By introducing, managing and monitoring a wide range of protocols and safety control measures to mitigate risks, some of the ways in which this milestone has been achieved includes:
Proactively conducting safety training by the general contractor (GC) to their subcontractors
Providing detailed work method statements with risk assessments for all works onsite
Including clear equipment inspection and maintenance protocols onsite
Enforcing global best practices in the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) exceeding local standards
Considering a risk hierarchy in all works planning – if the risk can be eliminated, it does not need to be managed.
Carrying out safety promotional activities with award and reward recognition
Holding daily, weekly and monthly site inspections with observation tracking
Exploring High Risk Activities (HRA) with a four week advance schedule to support planning and onsite communication
Implementing onsite activity briefing sessions held twice daily with all workers
Conducting independent health & safety reviews and audits on a regular basis
“Achieving one million safe working hours on site during the construction of our Osaka Keihanna data centre is yet again another fantastic milestone for the project team in Japan, and for Colt DCS as an entire organisation. This demonstrates the level of importance placed on health & safety for everyone involved at all stages of the planning and construction of this site - be that our own DCS staff, or partners and contractors working alongside us to deliver on schedule. As we progress onto the second phase of the data centre development, I look forward to celebrating more milestones with the team in achieving first class health & safety management on site.”
Gordon Hatton - VP, Head of Development & Delivery (Japan)
