Colt Data Centre Services enters major new market in Mumbai

Major investment in 100MW data centre will deliver hyper-scale [and cloud computing] data centre in India

Colt Data Centre Services (DCS), a Fidelity owned company today announced their entry into a major new market in India. The organisation has successfully acquired land in Mumbai and plans to build a 100MW IT hyper-scale data centre facility. The strategic decision to expand into India has been driven by the substantial customer demand it has received for best in class data centre space, as the consumption of cloud services continues to thrive in the country. Cloud revenue in India alone is predicted to be growing at 25 per cent CAGR between 2016-2021.

Mumbai has been identified as the ideal location for Colt DCS’ entry into India. The city is the financial hub of India and represents a large domestic customer vertical. The growing demand for digital services has attracted many international cloud service providers to enter or expand their existing footprint in the region. Colt DCS’ decision to enter the market will significantly increase the computing capacity to deliver low latency and high bandwidth services to international and local businesses and consumers.

“With half of the total population in India under the age of 25, the new generation of digitally savvy individuals is creating a huge data footprint in the region. As data consumption continues to rise at an exponential rate, more businesses and consumers are demanding a reliable data and network infrastructure to deliver fast connectivity and on-demand services. Colt DCS will play a key role in providing the data centre infrastructure to enable this through its investment in Mumbai,” said Detlef Spang, CEO at Colt DCS.

Colt DCS’ significant customer base and the exponential growth these customers are seeing within their own businesses require a data centre provider that can enable them to enter the booming market in India with the reassurance of working alongside a data centre operator who can provide them with a highly resilient and scalable solution in the region.

The 100MW facility will be part of a campus style development which will allow the organisation to build out further data centres within the same location. To facilitate a rapid delivery of the site, Colt DCS has already secured a substantial super high-voltage power supply of 150MVA utility feed to the site.

The campus will allow for larger deployment of cloud computing services, and assist Indian authorities and businesses to grow and expand in the region in line with the Digital India campaign. Colt DCS will be the first main-stream western data centre operator to enter the Indian market, which is predominately served by smaller and more local data centre providers. Construction work is expected to commence in 2019 for completion in the second half of 2020.

“The data centre industry is thriving, and we need new talent who can bring a variety of skills, experiences and background to support our business growth. One of the key barriers to getting more women into the STEM careers is down to the lack of information of what working in the sector entails, as well as the opportunity and encouragement for these individuals to thrive.”

“We are excited to have the opportunity to support Tech She Can and challenge the stereotypes of the data centre and technology industry, and work together to empower women to break into the industry,” Brunner added.

Sheridan Ash, Women in Tech leader at PwC and The Tech She Can Charter founder, said:

“Waiting until women are entering work is simply too late - to boost the number of females in technology we need to take coordinated action to start inspiring girls to consider technology careers while they are still at school.

“By working together we can reach more females at an earlier stage of their lives. We need to work harder to raise awareness about the exciting range of technology roles out there, in a sector that has the power to change the world. Technology is open to all and we need to get that message across.

“We welcome other organisations to sign up to our Charter and take action to solve this important problem."
